Another significant institution of the cultural life in the city of Craiova is the National Theatre "Marin Sorescu", named after a Romanian poet. The theatre was founded in 1850 and was the first theatre from a country in Central and Eastern Europe to become a member of the European Theatre Convention in 1995. The theatre building, which has become an architectural symbol of the city, was opened in 1973. The theatre with 170 years of history is one of the most important theatres in Romania.  National Theatre "Marin Sorescu" has participated in numerous international festivals, of which there are many awards and accolades. In 1996, the theatre was invited to perform in Brussels in the framework of the "Great Theatres of Europe". Since 1994 has begun the conducting of the International Shakespeare Festival. In 2016, the theatre organized for the first time in Romania the prestigious theatrical event European Theatre Awards.
